Door Access With Chronic Illnesses or Disabilities

Wheelchair Accessible Patio Doors

With some chronic illnesses or disabilities, hands and arms weaken, and opening doors can become a problem. Door width may also present problems for wheelchairs. One of the simplest ways to make doors easier to open is installing lever-style handles. Many medical suppliers also sell doorknob turners that convert round knobs to lever handles. Another option is the installation of an automatic door opener. These are extremely handy for wheelchair users and readily available for standard and sliding glass patio doors. For doors that are too narrow to provide adequate wheelchair clearance, space can obtain some relief by installing offset hinges which typically increase clearance by about two inches.
